The heart's association with love dates back to ancient times. The heart's symmetrical anatomical shape, which differs from the organ's actual form, has been used in verbal conceits by poets. For example, Plato argued that the chest plays a dominant role in love, while Aristotle believed the heart was supreme in all human processes. Medieval poets also popularized romantic metaphors that use the heart, such as the "wounded" heart, the "broken" heart, and the "stolen" heart.
The heart shape's origins are unknown, but some theories exist. Some believe the heart shape comes from ivy leaves, which are associated with fidelity, while others think it was based on parts of the human anatomy. Ancient societies also used heart shapes in decorative art, such as an Indus Valley civilization pendant with a heart-shaped fig leaf. The first known image of a heart is a miniature illustration from a French manuscript in the 1250s that depicts a kneeling lover offering his heart to his beloved.
Heart-shaped items, such as jewelry, can also have personal meanings. When given as a gift, heart jewelry can convey an intimate message of affection and care, and serve as a reminder of shared experiences and connections.
